More fines have been handed out in Whitby despite warnings to stay at home.

Whitby Neighbourhood Policing Team issued fines to a couple who drove to the coast "to smell the sea", officers say.

The pair travelled over 70 miles from Boston Spa, near Leeds, on Monday.

That's a round trip of of 140 miles, which would take around one hour 20 minutes each way.

And not an essential trip under the current coronavirus lockdown rules.

Whitby Town Police said: "This is not a reasonable excuse to travel into our area and they were told to return home immediately.

"We will continue to work hard to protect Whitby and the residents who are working just as hard to keep the town and rural areas safe."

And it seems the duo were not the only people flouting lockdown rules in North Yorkshire on Monday.

A driver failed a roadside drug test in Scarborough for cannabis after a lengthy journey.

Officers said he had travelled from Doncaster to Middlesbrough, and was heading back via Scarborough seafront.

That means the driver travelled over 130 miles before being stopped by the force.
